Blend community, creativity, and the vibrant artistic energy pulsing through Nashville, TN, and what do you get? Rare Unicorn Art Collective! A new endeavor that brings together Nashville artists through a monthly theme, Rare Unicorn Art Collective founders Christiana Odum and Winona Dimeo-Ediger are on our blog to talk about the why and how of their founding and on our socials today for #takeoverTuesday!
When we met up for coffee on that Saturday morning in November, Christiana and I knew a few things for sure: we wanted to start something. Something creative. Something that would inspire people to do art. Something collaborative. Something that would build community.
We sipped espresso and opened our sketchbooks and got down to business: what, exactly, would this something be?
Let’s hit pause on that scene for a little backstory: Christiana and I became friends when we moved into the upstairs and downstairs units of the same duplex in East Nashville five years ago. We connected over our shared interests (obsessions might be a better word) with art and Harry Potter, and got together frequently to work on projects, visit The Frist, and debate the morality of Dumbledore’s decisions (and sometimes all three at once).
And then, in 2016, I moved away.
I spent a year traveling, living out of a suitcase in Europe and then setting up temporary homes in Oregon and California. I had dreamed about this nomadic life for so long, but when it became a reality, I discovered there were three things I missed every single day: my friends, my easel, and Nashville, Tennessee.
I decided to come back to Nashville, and it wasn’t long after I’d landed in this fantastic, creative city that Christiana and I ended up sitting in that coffee shop, buzzing with ideas and swearing we wouldn’t leave until we’d hit on that something.
We brainstormed all kinds of art installations and collaborative projects before we hit on an idea that made us both go, “Oh my gosh, that’s it.”
What if we started an art community and gave the members a prompt every month to create a new project? And then what if we showcased our creations in a makeshift gallery?
So Rare Unicorn Art Collective was born. Every month, we announce a theme that artists can interpret however they want, in any medium. Artists anywhere in the world are invited to share their work on Instagram using the hashtag #RareUnicornArt. Nashville artists are invited to a monthly gallery show at a collective member’s house. Our vision is for these shows to be welcoming and inclusive and inspiring. We want to make time to do art and space to share our art. We want to prove that it’s possible to prioritize art and take it seriously — without pretentiousness. The first gallery show was held on February 10th. For two hours, my spare room was transformed into an art gallery displaying watercolors, acrylics, embroidery, colored pencil, photography, and even a portrait created out of kitchen spices. A group of artists of all skill levels and interests sipped wine and talked about their favorite paint colors and it was straight-up magical.
Honestly, this art collective is more than just a handy excuse to paint something new every month.
In a world that feels increasingly disconnected and dark, connecting with community and being creative is more important than ever. The simple act of making art and sharing it with friends feels profound; it feels hopeful and healing.
This month’s theme is “Together,” and the show will be held on March 10th. We’d love for you to join us.
