This month, we’re celebrating LGBT+Shes and Hope Cooper Buckner, our SHESpeaks host, had the chance to sit down with The Stiletto Chef, Shovann Staton-Backus. A registered-nurse-turned-culinary-entrepreneur, Shovann runs a successful social media based business that’s dedicated to celebrating the crazy, fun, flavorful and sexy side of cooking and food. But her work doesn’t stop there.
As a certified health and wellness coach, Shovann has the chance to intimately know her clients – and as a member of the LGBT community, she feels uniquely qualified to encourage honesty, authenticity and transparency from the women she works with. And it’s the power to live in her truth that continues to propel Shovann forward as a successful (and viral) business owner.
Beyond her work within her business, Shovann has dedicated her time to supporting other LGBT entrepreneurs. She’s involved in the Nashville LGBT Chamber (and is working on her national certification), which led to a historic accomplishment for the Nashville community just a few months ago when Mayor David Briley signed an Executive Order that affirmed inclusion for LGBT-owned businesses in Metro procurement.
You have to stand in your truth. If you don’t believe who you are, nobody else will believe who you are.
It’s this work, and her daily work with The Stiletto Chef, that allow her to do the work she’s always wanted to do (even as an RN earlier in her career) – to enhance the people around her and illustrate all people’s ability to succeed in any situation, any category, any “box” they’ve been put in.
And she looks to the ladies she works with as clients as some of her SHEroes — “they are the ones that keep me going,” she says. “Over all of the national women we all know, there’s still national women that I know that are more important than anyone.”
